Old Mexican parade horse, to be worn by a child in the July 25th feast day parade of St. James.

The horse and child rider are a representation of St. James the Great, Apostle and martyr.  The old Spanish equivalent for James is Iago, thus the name Santiago.  The body of St. James was being transported from Palestine to Spain at the time that Campostella was being overrun by the Saracens (Moors).  After the Spanish saw a vision of St. James riding across the sky on a white horse with sword raised, they were able to drive the Moors from Spain.  Thus the white horse, sword, and crown.

Carved wooden body, fiber mane and tail, wooden sword, heavy paper painted crown.   32" long, 19" high, 13" wide.  c1950's.  $450.
